Winter Trend: Surgical Solutions

There are just some treatments you don’t want to have when the days are long and the warm weather beckons, and those include anything that requires you hibernate indoors. There’s generally a good reason behind every trend that evolves, and reserving surgical procedures for the winter months is one of them.

The fact is, demand for surgical procedures triples in the fall and winter months. Here’s why: Clothing easily covers up swelling and bandages, you’ve got months till bikini season to recover, and it’s easier to avoid direct sunlight. After all, recovery from surgery takes time, and most patients would rather spend time indoors while it’s darker and colder, not during those long summer days.

Surgeries to consider having during the fall and winter months include facelift, rhinoplasty (nose surgery), blepharoplasty (eye lift / tuck), brow lift, liposuction, tummy tuck, breast augmentation  / breast lift / breast reduction and laser resurfacing.

Of course, the sun is always a big consideration for procedural timing, whether it’s surgical or nonsurgical. Even when only minimal recovery time from a procedure is required, you’re probably going to need to use extreme caution with sun exposure during initial recovery. That’s a tough rule to follow when the days are longest and the sun is at its strongest.

Another reason for the surge in surgical procedures during the winter is the desire to put your best face (and body!) forward in the spring and summer months. Even with the best planning, however, there are certain procedures that require several months after surgery—even after healing—to see final results.

Q&A with Shay: Does CoolSculpting really work for fat reduction?

Shay Moinuddin, MHA, RN
Aesthetic Nurse

The short answer is yes. CoolSculpting can provide a 20% to 25% reduction in fat in the specific area treated. As with any treatment, however, results depend on patient selection and realistic expectations. CoolSculpting isn’t a weight-loss solution, but it is a very effective solution for those patients who have a healthy, active lifestyle and looking for some help addressing those stubborn areas, including the love handles, tummy, thighs and back.

If you’re interested in learning more about CoolSculpting for yourself in 2015, call today for your personal consultation with one of our CANS-certified RNs: 312.202.0882

About Coolsculpting

Coolsculpting is an innovative non-surgical fat freezing treatment that offers safe, effective and permanent results. FDA-cleared for non-surgical fat reduction to the abdomen, flanks and inner and outer thighs, Coolsculpting uses controlled cooling that targets and freezes fat cells under the skin to eliminate stubborn fat without damaging the skin. Fat cells die, which the body naturally processes and eliminates over time.

CoolSculpting at The Few Institute is performed by CANS-certified RNs for safe and effective treatment. TFI is the only Chicago-area practice to offer dual sculpt technology, so CoolSculpting treatment is 50 percent faster compared with treatment with a single device.

Treatment Trends: What’s Hot Now at TFI

Medicine is constantly evolving, and the aesthetic specialty is no exception. Wondering what the treatment trends are this fall and winter? We’ve got the inside scoop on what’s hot now:

Laser Hair Removal

It’s true—we don’t tend to be too concerned about hair during the cooler months. However, if you want to be one of the lucky ones at the beach next summer who is happily hair-free, the time to begin planning hair removal treatments is now. Laser hair removal generally requires 6 to 8 treatments spaced about a month apart each. That’s a 6 to 8 month stretch to getting final results. So, if you’ve been putting this practical treatment off, planning your winter visits with us now will get you ready just in time for next bikini season!

At TFI, we use the latest in hair removal technology, the Palomar Vectus Laser, which has revolutionized the hair removal treatment process. The Vectus Laser delivers in both speed and comfort, and has shortened the traditional laser treatment time by 90%. Call us to book your treatments today! 312.202.0882

Stackable Treatment

If you’ve been looking for that elusive nonsurgical treatment that delivers close to surgical results, we’ve got good news. Thanks to Dr. Few’s research and pioneering role in the industry, there is now a way you can have a nonsurgical experience with surgery-like results! Dr. Few’s Stackable TreatmentTM treats the three aspects of the aging face by lifting, filling and resurfacing the skin and tissue in one treatment session to maximize results and minimize tissue trauma.

Medical-Grade Skin Care

While there are a handful of decent over-the-counter skin care products available at your local CVS, the fact is, if you’re investing in surgical or nonsurgical procedures, the best thing you can do to protect your investment and maintain long-lasting results is to use products with medical-grade ingredients and proven outcomes. There’s a great reason Dr. Few developed his own line, JF Aesthetic—if you look good, he does too! Check out our selection on

Laser Hair Removal FAQs

How does laser hair removal work?

At TFI, we use the latest in hair removal technology, the Palomar Vectus Laser, which is considered the fastest and most effective option for permanent hair reduction. Laser hair removal works by using light, which passes through the skin, targets melanin in the hair follicle and destroys it with an intense heat.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

You can expect about a 70% permanent hair removal rate after a full round of hair removal treatments. Permanent hair removal may depend on hair color, skin color and laser settings uses. Laser hair removal is not effective on white, gray or blonde hair. An annual touch-up laser treatment may be recommended.

How many treatments will I need?

Most patients generally require 6 to 8 sessions for optimal results. Most patients who have completed laser hair removal have also expressed satisfaction with a decrease in ingrown hairs.

Is laser hair removal safe?

Yes. Treatment with the Vectus Laser is safe for all skin types.

Does it hurt?

You can expect to feel pulses of heat during treatment, but the Vectus laser is the quickest and least painful treatment for hair reduction on the market.

How long does laser hair removal take?

The Vectus Laser delivers in both speed and comfort, and has shortened the traditional laser treatment time by 90%. Large areas, such as a leg or the back, can be treated in as little as 5 minutes.

What areas of the body can the Vectus treat?

All areas of the face and body: underarms, arms, chest, abdomen, back, bikini line, legs, chin, sideburns, mustache.
