Your Skin After 40

0

Could it really be as simple as three steps to a younger face at 40? Our very own Dr. Julius Few recently revealed to WCIU TheU the real results a few strategic, non-surgical treatments can deliver to improve the overall appearance of the face.

Clearer Skin

Often what happens, especially for women in their 40s, is that skin turnover is slower. And because the skin gets drier in the winter months, it clogs pores, Dr. Few explains. For that, he advises using a chemical peel as he did for Cindy (pictured). “Chemical peels,” he says, “are a great way to reset the skin.”

What Wrinkles?

In your 40s another simple way to rejuvenate your appearance is by relaxing fine lines and wrinkles. For Cindy, that meant botulinum toxin. Whether it’s Botox, Dysport or Xeomin, a few strategic injections and in just a few days, the improvements are noticeable.

Tired of Looking Tired

Skin and wrinkles under control, his evaluation of Cindy, Dr. Few also determined that placing a filler in her undereye hollows (tear troughs) would make a big improvement. Dr. Few places Restylane under the eyes with a catheter. He says that most patients barely feel it.

Overall, Dr. Few performed three nonsurgical treatments all in the same day that provided immediate results, with results improving over the next couple of weeks.

Cindy’s reaction? “I feel like I look awake now, she told the camera.”

We think her before and afters say everything, and bring a whole new meaning to “40 is the new 20.” Yes, a few quick nonsurgical treatments can make a huge difference in rejuvenating your appearance.

Shaving to Prevent Wrinkles?

0

Yes, you read that right. However in reality it’s not as far out there as it may seem (really!). Try to put aside those mental images of the bearded woman shaving in her bathroom at home. As it turns out, lots of women are doing it with a professional skin treatment called dermaplaning and for a more common facial concern all women share as we get older—dull skin.

Most of us know that the fix for dull skin is exfoliation. What you might not know is that shaving—dermaplaning—is a great alternative to more common professional exfoliating treatments, including microdermabrasion (SilkPeel) and chemical peels.

This safe and simple skin treatment exfoliates the epidermis to treat rough, dry skin, superficial hyperpigmentation, mild acne scarring, and fine lines and wrinkles. It also rids the skin of fine vellus hair (peach fuzz), which can cause a buildup of dirt and oil in the follicles. The result is clear, smooth, glowing skin. This treatment is safe for pregnant or nursing women who desire stronger exfoliation without the risk of chemical peeling agents.

Aging Skin Fix

As we age, the natural skin cell turnover process slows down, usually in your 30s. As dead skin cells collect on the surface of the skin, they muddle the complexion, making it look dull. Even worse, skin cells collect in fine lines, making wrinkles appear deeper and heavier than they actually are. Exfoliating treatments, such as dermaplaning, remove the dead skin cell build up to reveal healthy, glowing, more youthful looking skin instantly!

Shave to Exfoliate

During dermaplaning treatment, your aesthetician or aesthetic nurse uses a sharp, surgical blade to scrape away dead, dull skin. (She can even show it to you if you want to see it!) In the process, peach fuzz is also removed for perfectly smooth skin.

Dermaplaning is a quick lunch-time treatment that will leave you with a stunning skin result. You can expect the skin to be a little red, but with no irritation.

Step 1. Clean Up, Clear Out

The secret to skin that glows…? Exfoliation! No matter how many great products you use, if you don’t remove those old, dead skin cells, your skin will look dull and unhealthy. A sure solution? Is your skin cold-weather ready?

0

Cooler weather means drier air—a nice change from the humidity of summer—but it also means drier skin and that means more visible signs of damage and dullness. Hydration, dead skin cells and discoloration are the biggest factors that affect the appearance of the skin in the fall in winter, but you can keep your skin looking fresh and youthful with these 3 tips:

1. Scrub

No matter how well you take care of your skin, every few days it needs a good scrub to remove the dead skin cells that accumulate on the surface. These cells are responsible for overall dullness and their ability to emphasize fine lines and wrinkles.

Our Recommendation: MD Scrub. Using a clay base, this product delivers gentle heat as it removes dry dead skin cells, minimizes excess oils and reveal healthier, younger looking skin.

2. Hydrate

As the moisture levels in the air decrease, so do those in the skin. This is the time of year to book regular, monthly facials that incorporate steaming to open pores, cleansing to remove impurities, and exfoliation to shed dead skin cells. Serum and post treatment moisturizer will leave skin hydrated and glowing.

Try: Our Luxury Facial with Diane to ramp up hydration.

3. Correct

For all the damage the sun can cause, we give thanks to the Cutera laser. Not only does this little miracle stimulate collagen production, soften fine lines and wrinkles and minimize the appearance of pores, it’s also quick (no downtime!) and pain free.

And while it may be cooler, that’s no reason to neglect adding a little color. Maintain your sun-kissed glow this season with our favorite—GloMinerals bronzer.
